The Sharing with the Community Standard

Educators contribute to the profession.

“Educators honour the profession by supporting, mentoring or encouraging other educators and those preparing to enter the profession. Educators contribute their expertise in a variety of ways including opportunities offered by schools, districts, school authorities, professional organizations, post-secondary institutions and communities. Educators contribute to a culture of collegiality.” Reads the description of Standard 8 from the BCTC PDF.

Each player on a Minecraft server may choose how to exist with the other players. Sometimes the interactions cause conflict. Sometimes there are simply no interactions at all. Sometimes, however, players work together to create beautiful things.

[ID Begin: A Minecraft screenshot featuring a dark oak and stone brick tower near a river. The tower slightly resembles a lighthouse. Besides the river, the environment has grassy hills with a few trees. On the right side there is a box with a list of player names and their health: Greydonuts 20, Laurilith 20, molluigi 20, Garambit 12, and Astrofingers 5. ID End.]

When players collaborate, they are able to accomplish things that they might not have been able to by themselves. Some players love to mine cobblestone, other players may need that cobblestone. There is a sense of satisfaction that comes from being able to trust another player and say “there is some in the middle chest in my house, help yourself to it.” You may need a red mushroom and cannot find one anywhere, you can let the other players know and one day you might find a chest on your doorstep with plenty.

The community is worth giving to, in whatever way you can. The help you give will always find its way back to you in one way or another. I am so grateful for each of my coaching teachers for volunteering to help me grow into the educator that I have. Their guidance will be used in my practice for many years to come and I hope to one day be in a place where I might help mentor new teachers as they have. (It will be a while from now but I am still excited!)
