The Worldview Standard
Truth and Reconciliation
Educators respect and value thee history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada and the impact of the past on the present and the future. Educators contribute towards truth, reconciliation and healing. Educators foster a deeper understanding of ways of knowing and being, histories, and cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.
“Educators critically examine their own biases, attitudes, beliefs, values and practices to facilitate change. Educators value and respect the languages, heritages, cultures, and ways of know and being of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Educators understand the power of focusing on connectedness and relationships to oneself, family, community and the natural world. Educators integrate First Nations, Inuit and Métis worldviews and perspectives into learning environments.” Reads the description of Standard 9 from the BCTC PDF.
The most recent of the Professional Standards, as of right now, in essence is how educators are to elevate Indigenous ways of knowing and being in the education system. It is about fostering a more diverse and culturally responsive learning environment for all students. It requires a willingness to learn, unlearn, and relearn, and a commitment to ongoing growth and development. It demands educators to facilitate change.
[ID Begin: A painting on canvas. The majority of it is in hues of pink, yellow, and orange. It appears to depict hills with a setting sun in the back. There are three circles where the colours have been replaced with blues and green. The lines seem to continue into the discoloured circles as if a coloured lens had been placed there. ID End.]
This is a painting I created a few years ago for a class. We were asked to show our understanding of worldviews in any way we saw fit. The main point of this work is to say that we are always clouded by our biases. With reflection we are able to acknowledge those biases, decide whether or not they are valid in certain situations, and determine the best way to proceed. In education, reflection is a MAJOR part of the overall process. If we want to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in education then we need to celebrate the richness of our world from multiple perspectives.
